The importance of images in autism

Ana María Domínguez and Zaira RodríguezMay 21, 2024

A quick look at why images matter so much for autistic people.

Images make communication, understanding and learning easier.
Supporting communication: autistic people tend to process visual information better than verbal information; images help them express needs and feelings when spoken language is limited; instructions organized as images reduce stress and confusion; visual choices let them express preferences and take part in everyday decisions.
Understanding: images make abstract concepts tangible, make it easier to understand routines and the steps of a task so it can be done independently, help sustain attention, and by avoiding misunderstandings, reduce meltdowns.
Learning: images help with emotional regulation, learning new skills, visual memory and adapting to new environments.
Impact: better social interaction, greater participation in society and a better quality of life.
Images are a valuable tool that supports well-being for autistic people. They also respect each person's unique way of processing information, fostering independence and growth.
